Just how powerful are you?

It doesn’t matter if you are 16 or 62, you have the power to change the world.

Before I get into details, let me share my personal journey to embracing my own power.

In my previous post I talked about my decision to stop eating meat in college and I focused on the health benefits of a plant based diet. There was much more to it. During this period of my life I was becoming much more aware of the realities of the world we live in. In turn, I started making decisions based on this awareness.

Once I was living this new reality, meaning....in reality, I set about making changes. I tried finding cruelty free products that didn’t test on animals, I stopped eating meat, and I started recycling. At that point in my life those were the things I could control.

Guess what happened? After years and years I wound up feeling very alone and defeated. How could so many people ignore the inhumane treatment of animals. How could so few people care about our environment? Why couldn’t I figure out who was testing on animals and who wasn’t? How on earth was it even legal? Why was mass genocide happening in factory farms and why did we allow it? Who were we to inflict such suffering? Did we think the planet and everything on it was here for our use and abuse? It all left me feeling sick and powerless.

Years past, and then something amazing happened, people started embracing the internet in a new and powerful way! It took a while but awareness on issues that people were generally unaware of, started to surface, and more and more people started to speak up. I was not alone! People did in fact care. My faith was restored and I embraced my new found power to make change. All those wonderful people taking action got me back on my feet.

Turn up the Power! You are the Change waiting to Happen.

Speak up Using Petition Sites

People generally don’t have time to get out and fight a battle but you can easily support those who are out fighting for something you believe in. You can do it on your lunch break, at the gym, or on the train while you commute. I have signed hundreds of petitions and I’m here to tell you, it’s amazing what happens when thousands of people ban together. When I first started signing petitions my attitude was that I just wanted to speak up, but then I saw the results. I have read more than one email announcing a victory and cried. The feeling of knowing you helped save thousands of innocent animals is overwhelming. Especially when you’ve been waiting for it your whole life. Of course, there are many more issues being addressed. The protection of animals is just one of them.

Here are the sites I currently use:

Shop Responsibly. When money talks, People Listen.

Demand drives change. Here are a few examples of how you can bring about big changes.

1. If you only buy environmentally friendly and organic products, companies will start to listen, more environmentally friendly products will appear in the marketplace, and prices will come down. Of course this will also have a positive impact on the environment.

2. If you only buy cruelty free products, companies will start to listen, government will start to listen, and we will eventually see changes in animal rights legislation.

Here’s the app you need to identify cruelty free products when you shop:

Cruelty Cutter App by the Beagle Freedom Project
Get the app: http://cruelty-cutter.org/

LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this app!
I have it on my smart phone. If I’m looking for a new product, I scan the barcode. The app then tells me if the company test on animals or not. You can then share that information on your social media channels. They make it fun by giving you doggie dollars each time you “Bite Back” or “Share”, but I haven’t redeemed anything. I’ve been waiting for something like this for 20 years, I’m not in for a reward.

Conscious Cart has also started a Pinterest board on animal testing. WARNING: Animal testing is disturbing and difficult to witness. Be mentally prepared if you look at this board. As disturbing as it is, this is the reality behind the majority of products you buy every day.

3. If you stop buying meat at mainstream stores and restaurants or stop eating it all together, you can save thousands of animals from inhumane treatment in factory farms, have a positive impact on climate change (animal agriculture is the biggest contributor to this problem), and improve the health of a nation.
